customized wedding magnet – co & jo

wedding magnet - co & jo

Josephine’s sister first established contact with us, at that point, I was trying to clear all my outstanding orders before taking off for a well deserved hols (of course, any holiday is well deserved eh?).

My schedule was getting a little tight by then, so I wanted to be certain that I would be able to complete her order in time.

She is an amazing person! Probably one of the most polite brides I have encountered by far, and the gracefulness could be felt between the words in her email correspondences.

I would always advise the couple to leave the last few weeks to a month before the special day free, that period of time is usually the time when all the small stuffs come in. If we congest the schedule too tightly, we may find it a little too taxing to manage. Wedding is a beautiful event, we should be able to enjoy our special day with joy and laughter, who needs more stress?

My sincerest blessings to the couple, and wish them every joy and happiness in this new journey.

The artwork is chosen from the mix ‘n match images in our gallery, artwork design and copyright credit to PJ.

wedding magnet – elslyn and jonse

wedding magnet - elslyn and jonsewedding magnet - elslyn and jonse

I could only imagine the love story. Elslyn is the no-fuss, no-hassle bride, it is extremely easy to work the artwork coordination with her. I would think that she is a very decisive person who doesn’t sweat the small stuffs, yet meticulous enough to spot the details and express accurately of her expectations.

PJ took the initiative to make some changes to the colors which better match the background and ‘mannerism’ of the couple illustration. Since colors are very personal, I presented both versions to Elslyn, and with an open mind, Elslyn accepts the changes.

I guess Benjamin Shear’s bridge must have meant something special for this lovely couple, and I am confident that their journey together ahead will be a loving and blissful one.

when the east meets west (large wedding dolls)

when the east meets west

when the east meets west

When the East meets West, the sky sparkles with bursts of lovely fireworks, and all love doves gather to sing beautiful tunes to celebrate the joyous union of the couple!

The girl with the Japanese heritage; while the boy comes from the West. When the dear Cupid releases his love arrow, it brings loving union to the lovely couple.

This pair of wedding dolls are custom order. A very thoughtful gift for the best friend, who finds her true love.

They are on their way to Germany now, with such preciousness, the package goes with registered airmail service + express service* + insurance.

* express service – it’s an additional service on top of the registered service (available to certain destinations only), according to SingPost site, this small fee which adds to the postage fee, makes the package ‘priority’ when it arrives at the destination. (I actually had to ‘educate’ the post office of this service’s availability as per stated in their official website!)

I have this package insured for additional S$5.00 because the registered service has a limited indemnity of up to S$68 in the event of unforeseen eventuality. That is not quite enough to cover for the cost of these dolls, is it?

wedding dolls – custom

carrying you in my arms..carrying in my arms.. we enter a new phase in life

You already know that we offer colors customization, and occasional requests of custom designs. What you are about to see is new, I mean NEW!

The design is not new, I did a new wedding doll design a while back – which I can’t remember when, I have low ability to remember dates – and this is a Special custom order for Asian couples, with the bride wearing red gown instead of the usual white.

we are all blessed and happy

Now that I placed the original set of Matt and Lindsay that has my signature mini style with the custom dolls. It’s not difficult to notice the size difference!

‘Mummy! I blew up the dolls!’ Right, the NEW and SPECIAL is that this pair of wedding couple is intended to be tied to the car front, so my original barely 7cm tall dolls are a tad too tiny to be seen on the car. We don’t want to cause any traffic accidents with too many other road users slowing down to try to figure out what the tiny little cuties are on the car, do we?

This set of custom dolls measure approximately 16cm tall from ground to the groom’s head; and about 17cm tall from ground to the head of the bride.

WIP - the happy groom waiting to be assembled

If you still have problem trying to get a hint of the size of the doll… I am an average sized Asian woman, with not too large, and not too small hands. When I clenched my hand into a fist, the head of the groom is actually larger (if not equivalent) than my fist!

I have been in this business since 2006, and have been designing amigurumi/crochet dolls since early 2007. I adore mini dolls, and I specialize in designing small dolls. I have received many requests to make larger sized dolls, thus far, this is the first request I accept.

I cannot emphasize enough how much I value and appreciate weddings. Every wedding is very unique and special to me, I would rather lose some businesses than to mess up anyone’s wedding. It took me this long to feel very confident (yes, confident is not good enough for me, I need to be VERY confident before I accept a custom order) to attempt to blow up the size this huge.

The great thing about my work, I design my dolls, and I understand fully why the design is done the way it is, every details have been considered to achieve certain result that I imagined. I take a great deal of pride in the work I do. It’s not just adding a few more stitches, a few more rows, it’s.. do, redo, undo, hit my head on the wall, pull out some of my hair.. (fine, this is exaggerated expression) just a lot of efforts.

I usually need a day to finish a pair of mini sized dolls; I used 3 days to complete this pair of large dolls.

wedding favor – wee khiam & christina

wedding favor - Wee Khiam & Christina

This is a very sweet fairy tale alike love story…

When Chris contacted me about her interest in customizing wedding favors for her wedding, she shared with me her love story.

Wee Khiam and Christina have been friends for a long time, but love has its way to work the wonders in its own mystical way. The sweet love only happens when they were posted overseas for work.

The couple was actually based in different countries; one in South Africa, the other in China. As much as we may think maintaining a long distance relationship is challenging, this amazing couple not only overcomes the challenges but cherishes this treasured love they both share.

Now, they bring this relationship to a greater height… a blissful marriage, ever after.

Chris has been one of the most patient, and lovely lady I have worked with. She keeps an open-mind towards the artwork design, and allows us to do what we do best.

In the artwork, Chris only has 2 main requests; Asian eyes for the couple; and the South Africa ‘Table Mountain’.

Herein, we wish the couple a blissful marriage, and a wonderful wedding!

Casual conversation – Customization

I was talking with a friend the other day, about the work I am doing, and the shopping cart I am building.

As I started to explain to here why the shopping cart is taking me forever to build, as with any customization service, there is quite a bit of ‘construction’ of the order flow.

Very quickly, she picked up that I offer quite a fair bit of customization service for my products. She liked the idea of customization as she thought that the buyers today have a strong identity and preferences. The topic then moved deeper into ‘Customization’. She also asked why would I bother to include all other sample works since I offer customization, the buyers can just choose their own color combinations.

There is a common concept that is shared amongst our fellow Singaporeans about customization. My friend asked if I would mock up the item as per the requested color combination for the dolls; or the idea of wedding artwork.

This is something most of us fail to comprehend. Instead of replying directly to her question, it’s easier to build a similar scenario for her.

I asked her if she was preparing for her wedding, she stepped into a bridal studio, browsed through the portfolio, or the actual sample dresses showcased in the wardrobe, she liked the style of the designs, she particularly loved the gown tailored to a mermaid tail, however, she would love to have a pink color satin material instead of the off-white color in the showcase. She would also love to have the trail line shortened since she tripped and fell easily.

Now, clearly, customization is required for her. Would the bridal studio mockup the dress for her without her committing a deposit placement?

Moving forward, when she has placed a deposit for her dress, specifying the design, style, and specs of the dress she imagined to be, and the dress is made ready for her first fitting. The designer followed her requirements and made the dress as per her requests, she decided she didn’t want the mermaid style anymore, and decided to have a princess dress instead. Would this be reasonable?

As we discussed further into this topic, we arrived at the point that customization is not meant for everyone.

That is precisely why I try to include all other sample works in each listing, to allow the group of buyers who are strictly visual, and has lesser capability to visual customized work.

We have to understand that not everyone is able to imagine the final output, they are better with ready work, because they are more confident that they get what they see. These buyers are less adventurous and not exactly up to being surprised.

While on the other hand, there is a group of people who are highly imaginary, they know what they want, and are better equipped with fitting the colors into their mind structure of the possible output of the final products. They could better imagine what it may be like when the dress is changed to pink etc. With customization, we ought to keep an open mind, be amazed with the final output. Always give allowances for reality differences from imaginary expectations.

There is no classification of better group or worse group in this case, we are just different. I know many buyers who have problem with visualizing the yet-existent. Mike, and my mum belong to this group. They are not able to visualize the yet-exist concepts. Mike would ask me to make the real thing first, before he could even say if it’s feasible.

Architect will not start building a real house just to show the client.. ‘hey, this is what it’s going to be like, you like it? no? Ok, I will tear it down, and build another one to show you.’ They do blue-prints, sketches etc, they may mockup a model scaled to size etc, depending on the trade.

So to speak, it’s not reasonable to me when buyers asked me to make a doll according to their color selection, they will look at the few combinations and decide if they want to place the order. Remember, customized order is made just for you, so we don’t make several in order for you to decide if you are even buying it. Most customized service is charged with additional fee, and that is for a reason. CHOICE is luxury. As with individual preferences, there may not be another person who has an exact liking of what we do, therefore, each customization is unique.

After all I had said, my friend wanted to confirm if I would not consider it at all if a buyer was to ask me to come up with several variations in the wedding artwork; or make the dolls as presentation to their color selections, just so that they can decide if they should order with me. Otherwise, how would they know what they will be getting?

My reply is not all that favorable, but I will be honest and frank, I said, ‘Don’t even bother to ask’. The reason to build a gallery to showcase the style and adaption of my designer, is clear enough that you have better like her style, because you can’t exactly expect a dress-maker who specializes in making female dresses, to make a stunning male outfit (if she has already make known that she specializes in female outfits). The image of my dolls is already a sample of my work.

Especially with handmade items, labor cost is high, unless some mass produces, they may promise to design and produce before you even commit to order, and if you don’t like it, you may not take up the order. Honestly, I don’t know many of these.

My friend seemed to be liking my explanation and has accepted well of the notions. She agreed that she hadn’t considered all these before, and only wanted to safeguard her own interest just so that she doesn’t lose out.

She is a good friend, and we have always been frank with each other, I told her, she wasn’t the right candidate for customization service with that kind of mindset ingrained. For each customization work, there is always a risk involved, so she ought to keep an open mind, and also be more adventurous to explore on creativity works. She was glad she spoke with me though.
